One of the leading choreographers in Finland and artistic director of Helsinki Dance Company, Jyrki Karttunen takes over the stage in his solo work by surrendering his body and mind to the aging diva Jemina. „Jemina – Act as you’d know her“ examines drag shows as a possibility for societal clownery, juxtaposing man and woman, day and night, glamour and mundane, real and fake. The performance is based on structured improvisation and inspired by stand-up comedy, soft porn cabaret and contemporary dance.
„Jemina – Act as you’d know her“ won the Theatre Work of the Year 2012 award. Jury behind the award described the piece as absurd as life. „Jemina brings the best traditions of dance, theatre, stand-up and performance up to date. The women it portrays are intelligent, reckless and corporeal. The team combines touching and grotesque aspects with manipulation with spontaneous ecstasy. The stories in the performance are so absurd, just like life, they transcend all gender divisions“, the jury wrote.

Jyrki Karttunen (born 1969) started his career as a dancer in Helsinki City Theatre Dance Company, where he worked from 1989 to 1993. During his stay, he performed in the choreographies of Jorma Uotinen, Marjo Kuusela, Tommi Kitti and Carolyn Carlson, among others. Working as a freelance dancer and choreographer since 1993, Mr. Karttunen visited Helsinki City Theatre as a dancer and choreographer. The internationally successful dancer / choreographer was also one of the founding member of Nomadi Productions. The year 2008 saw the founding of Karttunen Kollektiv, a dance company where he worked as artistic director until the end of 2013.
Jyrki’s works are built on tensions between contradicting elements. The performances combine abstract components with theatrical scenes. Movement compositions, choreographed with mathematic precision, are dissolved by surprising and playful twists. Strange and confusing events alternate with tender moments of togetherness. The basis for it all is Jyrki’s genuine interest towards people and their behaviour. The performances offer a possibility to stop for a moment and collectively admire how magical life really is.
Helsinki Dance Company (HDC), founded in 1973, is the biggest contemporary dance company in
Finland. HDC is a group of eleven dancers and it works in connection with Helsinki City Theatre, a large repertory theatre. Starting January 2013 choreographer J. Karttunen has been HDC’s artistic director.
