Dancer, choreographer, and educator Birutė has entered the dance world from artistic gymnastics, being a part of the “Sonata” dance group (led by Kira Daujotaitė) for ten years, and learning a lot in various seminars abroad.
She founded a dance studio AURA in 1980, which was registered as a Kaunas city theatre in 1995; Birutė still manages this theatre.
Before Lithuania gained its independence, the choreographer was the first one to invite foreign colleagues and dance teachers to the country, organising seminars, initiating projects with artists from various fields, senior citizens, and disabled people. AURA was shaping the face of contemporary dance in Lithuania, giving a great start to many professionals who are known worldwide.
In 1989, AURA was responsible for the country’s first contemporary dance festival, which has been surprising audiences for almost 30 years now; it became international and was renamed in 2011, becoming an important part of Kaunas’ art life.
Birutė has two Lithuanian theatre awards “Golden Stage Crosses”, an Honour Award “Carry the light and believe”, a culture and art prize from the Lithuanian government, a culture and art award from the city of Kaunas, and many others.
